Description

An official history of one of the largest child welfare organizations in North America, which was formed by a 1951 amalgamation of the Infants’ Home and Infirmary (founded 1875) and the Children’s Aid Society (founded 1891), this book provides a good overview of social conditions in Toronto throughout the life of both organizations and particularly those of children and families. Changes in legislation to protect and care for children and to facilitate adoption, as well as changes in attitudes towards families are covered. The chapter “War and it’s aftermath” details the Society’s role in settling War Guests from the UK, and services to soldiers’ families during WWII.
