The census returns for Toronto taken in January 1852 have not survived, so tax assessment records for 1853 (compiled in 1852) are an important “census substitute” for researchers.
This Toronto Branch publication includes a fold-out map of Toronto c1853, and a guide to the records available for family and local history research for that time period. A full transcription, broken down by street, to the 1853 tax assessment rolls is complemented by an explanation of the columns and abbreviations used and a guide to the occupations listed. A name index follows. The index can also be consulted in The Ontario Name Index.
NOTE: This product is no longer sold with images of the original tax rolls on an accompanying CD. However, the images are now available to view for free through FamilySearch at https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/71742?
