Description

Beginning as the “Society for the Relief of Strangers in Distress” in 1817, the Society responded to the increase of immigration after the War of 1812. It was for many years, the major welfare agency in York. As well as an extensive introduction and history of the Society, the book includes a transcription of two record books: “Emigrants admitted into Temporary Houses at York” (450 families) and “Provisions issued to the the Sick and Destitute Poor of York” (more than 900 instances), a consolidated index, and illustrations.
