Description

This booklet contains the lists of York County inhabitants extracted from Rowsell’s City of Toronto and County of York Directory for 1850–51. (City of Toronto residents are not included.) Includes Etobicoke, Scarborough, and York Townships which are now part of the city of Toronto, as well as many townships and villages that later became parts of Ontario, Simcoe, and Peel counties: Albion, Brampton, Brock, Caledon, Chinguacousy, Cooksville, Georgina, Toronto Twp. and Gore, East and North Gwillimbury, King, Mara, Markham, Oshawa, Pickering, Port Credit, Rama, Reach, Scott, Springfield, Streetsville, Sutton, Sydenham, Thorah, Uxbridge, Vaughan, Whitby, and Whitchurch. Each listing (heads of households) gives a location, usually lot and concession—which is crucial in locating rural land records. A good substitute for the 1852 census which is missing for some of these townships.
