Description

In 1843, the Annual Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada resolved that a General Register of births and baptisms be kept at the Conference office in Toronto. Each year, every minister would receive a ruled book to record baptisms. The books were submitted at the end of the year, and the entries transcribed into the General Register. The centralized register includes 127,000 records primarily from Ontario, but also from parts of Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan. With mergers in the Methodist community, the General Register includes records from the Methodist Church of Canada from 1874 to 1884, and then the Methodist Church (Canada) from 1884 to 1910.

This publication is a transcription of the more than 7,500 records from locations in Toronto and historic York County (now York Region). Most records include birth and baptism dates, parents’ names, location and minister. The publication is fully indexed and includes lists of ministers, and places of baptism. The index can also be consulted in The Ontario Name Index.
